It may seem counter to your first thoughts, but purebred Boers are those who are less than 100% Boer, while fullbloods are 100% Boer. disclaimer: there are three different boer goat associations who can change their rules independently at at time, so please verify the rules of your association before making decisions dependent on this information.

Basically, there are three registry books for Boer goats.

1. Fullblood Boer Does or Bucks: 100% Boer -- there is no non-Boer in the animal's pedigree.

2. Percentage Boer Does: The female offspring of any registered fullblood (fb) or purebred (pb) buck with any doe can be registered as a percentage boer doe. Percentage males aren't registered and are used for meat or 4-H wethers in most cases. It's also important to know that you cannot take a registered fullblood doe and breed her to an unregistered buck and register the offspring. In all cases, the buck must be a registered fb or pb boer in order to register the offspring. You can take the fb buck and breed him to a herd of dairy does, and register all female offspring. Take a herd of fb boer does and breed to a dairy buck, and nothing is registerable.

3. Purebred Boer Does or Bucks: Does are considered purebred at 93.75% or higher (15/16ths) Boer, and bucks are considered purebred at 96.875% (31/32nds) and greater. Purebreds show in the same classes as fullbloods at shows. Percentage does show separately.

Here's a chart with examples of what offspring you get from mating does of various % boer with a registered fullblood buck:

Dam: Sire: Female Offspring: Male Offspring:
non-Boer or non-registered registered Fullblood (100% Boer) 50%

can be registered

50%

cannot be registered

50% Boer, registered % doe registered Fullblood (100% Boer) 75%

can be registered

75%

cannot be registered

75% Boer, registered % doe registered Fullblood (100% Boer) 88%

can be registered

88%

cannot be registered

88% Boer, registered % doe registered Fullblood (100% Boer) 94%

reg. as purebred

94%

cannot be registered

94% Boer, registered purebred registered Fullblood (100% Boer) 97%

reg. as purebred

97%

reg. as purebred

To figure out the % boer of your goat, add the % from the dam and the % from the sire and divide by two.

example 1: 50% boer doe, 100% boer buck ...50+100=150; 150 / 2=75% boer kids

example 2: 94% boer doe, 100% boer buck ...94+100=194; 194 /2=97% boer kids
